Patricia Thaine is a Computer Science Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Toronto and a Postgraduate Affiliate at the Vector Institute researching privacy-preserving natural language processing, with a focus on applied cryptography. Her research interests also include computational methods for lost language decipherment.

She is the Co-Founder and CEO of Private AI, a Toronto- and Berlin-based startup creating a suite of privacy tools that make it easy to comply with data protection regulations, mitigate cybersecurity threats, and maintain customer trust.

Nick Gaylord has worked as a data scientist in the Bay Area for about the last 5 years. Currently, he’s a member of the Johnson & Johnson Health Technology team, and prior to that, he has worked in different fields ranging from small business revenue analytics to enterprise machine-learning-as-a-service platforms. Like many data scientists, he started out as an academic before transitioning to industry, in his case earning a Ph.D. in Psycholinguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013.

In his day-to-day, he builds dashboards and models, and runs analyses that drive business decisions and provide stakeholders with meaningful access to data. He enjoys empowering people with data by visualizing and analyzing various types of data visually and/or with statistical and machine learning approaches. He is an avid R/RStudio/RStudio Connect user.
